Privacy first
SMS is not an encrypted channel. Keep identifiers and instructions in the message, never results, diagnoses, or clinical detail. "Your results are ready — please collect them" is appropriate. "Your HIV test is negative" is not.

Workflow
The pattern most clinics and hospitals settle into. Every message is transactional — DND-corridor routing applies, so reminders reach every patient.
From your booking system
A new appointment is created with the patient's phone number, date, time, and doctor. The phone number is normalized to E.164 on intake.
Automated
A reminder goes out 24 hours before the appointment. One segment, DND-compliant. 'Your appointment is tomorrow at 11am with Dr Ogundipe.'
As needed
Delays, rescheduling, or confirmation that the doctor is ready. Only sent when there's a genuine change.
Optional
Prescription-ready or results-ready alerts after the visit. Sent with careful handling of what goes into the body — identifiers only, never results or diagnoses.
Confidentiality in practice
SMS is not an encrypted channel. The rules below keep appointment and pickup logistics usable without turning a text message into a clinical record.
Identifiers only
Name, appointment time, clinic location, doctor. Everything needed to turn up — and nothing more.
Appointment and service updates
Rescheduling, delays, results-ready, prescription-ready. What needs to happen next, without saying what happened.
Never sensitive diagnosis language
No test results in the message. No conditions, no diagnoses, no medication names. If a patient needs to know, ask them to collect in person or via a secure portal.

Almost all healthcare SMS is transactional — appointments, pickups, results-ready alerts. DND-corridor routing applies, so reminders reach DND-registered patients too.
Questions from healthcare providers
You can, and most clinics do. What we strongly advise against is including results, diagnoses, or clinical detail — SMS is not encrypted. Identifiers and logistics only.
Yes. Appointment reminders and pickup alerts are transactional — they route through the DND-compliant corridor and reach every Nigerian mobile number, DND or not.
Inbound SMS (two-way) is on our roadmap. For now, include a portal link or a number to call. STOP replies are honored automatically and suppress future sends.
